American Idol XIII: Top 10 Perform – Billboard or Boredom?

Normally I would revel in a theme that would force the contestants to pick modern songs or ones that hadn’t been done on the show before, but this season we haven’t really been having that problem. Still, this week’s theme forced our contestants to show they could be current and relevant to today’s music scene. […]

Sustainable Substitutions for Your Sweet Tooth

Living with a sweet tooth is hard and almost makes any diet impossible to follow.  However with spring here and beach season on the horizon, everyone’s internal clock has been put on red alert. Now is the time to kick those always forgotten New Year’s resolutions into high gear, am I right? There’s a certain […]

A Little Daunted: “Divergent”

It must be really difficult to make a movie based off of a wildly popular book, especially when that book is the first of a series. There is a lot to manage. The writers, the actors, the director all have to find the right balance between being true to a story that already has rabid […]

Can You Have a Happy Marriage Without Sex?

For the past few years, social scientists have been studying sexless marriages for clues about what can go wrong in relationships and factors leading to the issue. In an article last year from the National Post, author and marital therapist, Andrew G. Marshall stated that sexless marriages have become the latest epidemic many married couples are silently facing today.

American Idol XIII: Top 11 Perform – Movies and Shakers

After a sleepy night of performances during the Top 12, the judges were fired up and trying to push the contestants harder to deliver better performances. So, naturally, I was pretty pumped myself to see if they could live up to the challenge during the Top 11 “Songs of the Cinema” theme. Perhaps the most […]

Graphic Fiction: A Picture is Worth A Thousand Words

Recently, I’ve discovered graphic fiction: comic books, graphic novels, and manga. Without a doubt, graphic fiction is an under appreciated genre of literature. And I admit, up until taking a class on graphic fiction at school, I’d never given the genre a second thought myself. To me, they were always about superheroes and villains, fighting […]

The Pretty Files: Spring 2014 Trend

They tell me that spring is almost here. I’m inclined to believe them as I was able to forgo a coat for the last couple of days and even managed to break out my flip-flops one day last week. I don’t know about you, but I am super excited about the warmer weather not only […]

“Veronica Mars”: Is There Still Life On Mars?

It’s been 7 years since we left our blonde teenage private investigator (played by the lovely Kristen Bell) wandering through the rain in Southern California; and after a record setting Kickstarter campaign only a year ago, show creator Rob Thomas and the cast brought her back to us for a cheap (by movie standards) fan-funded […]

The Best St. Patrick’s Day Recipes

What originally started out as a holiday for Christians to celebrate the life of of one of the most recognized Saints—Saint Patrick—has since turned into day of celebration of Irish culture, by people that or religious or not. It’s a day filled with lots of green, shamrocks, food, and for some—lots of alcohol. My own […]

Coldplay Enchants the iTunes Festival at SXSW

UK band, Coldplay performed an 11-song setlist before hundreds of fans on the historic stage of the Moody Theater in Austin, Texas last night (the same stage as the beloved PBS series, Austin City Limits). The quintet played a few of their old favorites, as well as debut some new tunes from their forthcoming sixth studio album, “Ghost Stories”—slated for a May 19 release. The band hasn’t released any new music in the last two years and lead singer Chris Martin knows it, telling the audience, “We’ve been away a long time and I can’t think of a better place to come back into the world.”

American Idol XIII: Top 12 Performances – Home Run or Heading Home?

Perhaps it’s exactly what Harry said during the results show this week. Maybe mentor Randy Jackson just isn’t spending enough time to these kids to make sure they give the best possible performances they can. On Wednesday night the judges honesty, if inconsistent, seemed to drag the show down. I appreciate them giving feedback to […]
