Aziz Ansari: Buried Alive

Last month I caught the first of two sold-out Aziz Ansari shows in Atlanta. Following Louis C.K.’s model, Ansari recently began self-distributing his Dangerously Delicious comedy special for $5 a download. For his current Buried Alive tour, Ansari performed over an hour of new material including an encore. While hisIntimate Moments for a Sensual Evening and Dangerously Delicious tours and comedy specials were laden with pop culture references, Buried Alive focused on the challenges of growing up. From online dating to friends getting married and having babies, Ansari touched on more mature topics than in the past.

At 29 years old, Aziz Ansari is grappling with adulthood. And as a 25-year-old girl with more married friends than single pals, it’s comforting to hear Ansari’s humorous take on the fears of growing up. Settling down, getting married, and having kids is a big step–what do you do if you’re not ready for that? While Ansari doesn’t offer any insight to help you navigate adulthood, his hilarious commentary makes it seem less scary.

Of course, unable to fully stray from jokes on pop culture, Ansari sprinkled in riffs on MTV’s 16 and Pregnant and My Super Sweet 16 among stories of singing Seal’s “Kiss from a Rose” in front of the singer and his first informal meeting with President Obama.

Former Parks and Recreation writer Chelsea Peretti opened. Her self-deprecating humor and observations of the double standards for women successfully primed the audience for Ansari. Peretti will be opening for the remaining Buried Alive tour dates. For tour dates and tickets, please visit Aziz Ansari’s official site.
