Tania’s Top Fashion Trends of 2012

Fashion is, and always has been a clever way of expressing one’s inner self in a creative and fun style. The way you dress in whatever unique fashion, not only sends a message of who you are but shows modern thinking with an escapist sort of attitude. In some ways, fashion is a great art and creating your own personal style is a lot like music that bounces to a rhythm through the seasons.

With the year winding down, the world of fashion saw many different trends and styles developing throughout the months and while some of them were kind of outrageous, a lot of them caught on with style-goers who appreciated the simplicity of such looks. What’s great about some of the trends that excited many is that they can easily transition into the new year and stay consistent with your wardrobe!

Now some of my favorite trends have always been STRIPES and LACE. Obviously not always together, but these two never go out of style and definitely have stuck around as comfortable and reliable trends throughout the years. Stripes don’t always have to make you look like Waldo in a crowd, and nor does lace in its fun and flirty appearance have to be reserved for the bedroom. Stripes which are heavily influenced from nautical pieces can be very stylish when paired tastefully; and lace, which has been adding a reserved yet delicate look for generations can be used to accentuate and alter the appearance of any outfit. These two simple staples of mine can easily be adapted with the following trends that I absolutely adored this season! Let’s take a look at them:

I Love You to Infinity:

One of my favorite trends that started earlier in the year was the INFINITY SCARF. We all love scarves because in all simplicity they keep us warm, but did you know these looped scarves and their unique design are highly adaptive to your mood? It’s true! With its continuity, there are endless styles with the help of YouTube and Scarves.net that can be created and make any outfit pop or look brand new. They add a very chic extra layer to an outfit and for those of you not into wearing much jewelry, this makes a great accessory. From a daytime to night-time look, these scarves are an essential for any wardrobe especially if you want to transition your look from casual to chic without overpowering what you’re really wearing. What’s great about this trend is that it’s unisex too, and makes for great stocking stuffers or party favors!

Color My World:

The summer found most of us wading in a vibrant sea of colors like tangerines, corals, bright reds, cobalt blues, and forest greens. These colors made the most impact not just through a blouse or t-shirt, but through the trend of COLORED PANTS. A trend sought out by both men and women, this fad came into full swing this past Spring and Summer but that doesn’t mean you only wear them during the warmer seasons. This will stay throughout the new year and be one of those trends that everyone can enjoy because color really brings out personality. These funky pops of color seen in trousers and denim become the focal point of any outfit and don’t let that scare you. The beauty of these colored pants is that they not only jazz up your outfit, but accent the overall mood you give off, while allowing you to play with traditional colors from your own liking by creating a statement piece. Whether you pair it with prints or neutrals, try “color blocking” where you take bold opposites or similar shades and put them together for contrast, the key is to have fun! The Fall has seen this trend transition from the bold bright colors to more demure ones with darker, earthy tones and the excitement isn’t lost at all as it can still add color to these bland winters.

Pep Up Your Life:

A trend that was first seen in the 1800s and moved its way to the wardrobes of several golden era actresses in the ’30s and ’40s, became a fast favorite among trendsetters earlier this year. Known as a waisted flare top, the PEPLUM is a sort of short flared over-skirt that can be found on shirts, jackets and dresses. They’re very feminine and add quite a bit of spring to the standard blouse we’re all accustomed to wearing day-in and day-out. What’s great about the peplum top is not only does this trend accentuate the natural waistline, but it creates the illusion of an hourglass frame while helping to hide the realistic “not-so-flat” tummies the average woman has. Now that being said, it can be very tricky for some women with a naturally wider waist to wear this particular trend but don’t let that frighten you from experimenting and trying it out! Sometimes the extra “pep” can make you look larger than you actually are, so a personal tip that I suggest is to look for peplum that is shorter and more tailored; make sure the flare is a little less dramatic and more subtle. Try wearing a peplum top that balances out the tone of your outfit with the clever use of color-blocking which will even out the volume of the peplum around your hips. The wisest thing to do is pair a top of this type with pin or body-con skirts, as well as skinny leg pants and jeans. A big no-no is to wear a peplum with flared pants or jeans because that would deter focus from the main item, which is the peplum. By pairing this trend with a slimming pant you’re on top of the trend and definitely heading your way to fashionista status! No matter your body shape—banana, apple, pear or hourglass, try this trend out. I’m positive many women can pull this one off.

The Collar That Never Grows Up:

The beauty of fashion is that eventually a new generation will always appreciate the trends of yesteryear. The PETER PAN COLLAR has become a hot trend in 2012 and is showing no signs of flying back into “Neverland” anytime soon. Popularized by starlets like Audrey Hepburn and Mia Farrow in the 1960s, to most recently, Emma Watson at press junkets, this retro-vibe trend is one that everyone can try out. The collar is a round-cornered and flat collar named after the collar of the costume worn by actress Maude Adams for her portrayal of Peter Pan back in 1905. It became a quick fad among fashion-goers and was primarily seen in the apparel of little girls, transitioning soon enough towards mature wardrobes and wedding gowns. Today the trend can be worn under a sweater, on a shirt or even accessorized as a detachable piece of jewelry which can become very beneficial for those on a budget, but feel the need to be on top of the style today. The softness of the rounded collar is a great way to amp up the appearance of a top and create not just a fun and feminine look, but a playful and romantic one since it emphasizes a simple yet chic wide-eyed approach to your overall style. With a top like this, you can be both sweet and flirty but achieve it in a very subtle way. Some of the collars are plain while others are available in a flashy glittery look; and some even come with bows to create further detailing to the look you’re aiming to achieve.

Glitter and Gleam, Sparkle and Shine:

Christmas might be over, but with winter dulling everything down in the white abyss of snow, adding a little bit of SPARKLE AND GLITTER to your wardrobe is an everlasting trend. This past season we saw a lot of glitter and sparkle in cardigans, skirts, dresses, and hats but this is a tricky trend. You want to avoid looking like a disco ball at all costs! Worn tastefully, and this trend can effortlessly jazz up casual daytime outfits but still add enough glamour to your night-time look. If you’re going to wear something glittery, make sure it’s either a top or a dress but be sure to go subtle with shoes and makeup; otherwise, use it as an accent to pair with casual solid colors. Glitter and sparkle can be found in anything and be treated as an accessory, especially if you’re not into jewelry like myself. Focus on accentuating the sparkle and shine through the use of belts, clutches, hair pins, shoes, cosmetics, or even nail art. Now if you’re looking for a tinge of sparkle, look towards the metallic trend right now which is coming up in the new year. Metallic clothing can add that shine in a very subtle way through pure metallics or mattes, but still add that sparkle you desire to achieve. A little sprinkle of sparkle and glitter can do wonders to your outfit!

Party to the Maxi:

I absolutely adore dresses and this past Spring and Summer, the MAXI DRESS made a big splash on the fashion scene. Worn also around the Fall, these long dresses give an effortlessly chic look and are not just comfortable, but are incredibly flirty and feminine. Sure you won’t be able to see our gams and we might be hiding the fact that we forgot to shave today, but these dresses are a staple to have in your wardrobe as they can be dressed up or down. Maxi dresses can be worn on those cool evenings styled with a cardigan, a blazer or even better; hop onto the motorcycle jacket trend, with wearing a moto jacket! That one is a personal favorite—very bold, but adds great punch to the dress which can be found in either strapless, halter, or sleeveless styles. The key to finding the perfect maxi dress is that it should be very long (reaching your ankles) but not long enough to clean sweep the floor up behind you. Make sure it’s to your height and fitting! The fun part about maxi dresses is that they’re also very bright in color and come in a variety of prints. Paisley was a very popular one this past season, along with tribal and floral prints, but whichever print or color you choose, be sure to pair them up with subtle and proper footwear like boots, sandals, wedges or flats.

This year saw a ton of color, bold prints, and a modernized look at some classics. As we head in 2013, there are quite a bit of trends that can be carried over into the new year while continuing to serve you, keep your wardrobe looking fresh and making sure your expenses are in ship-shape after all the holiday shopping.

As someone who appreciates the simplicity of fashion, I tend to approach the ever-changing trends in small doses in order to create my own look. It’s important to feel comfortable in your clothes because they’re all about you at the end of the day and that means that they need to move with your body. An outfit could cost well up to $300, but that doesn’t mean you’re going to be comfortable in it or wear it all the time. When approaching these trends, go with something that you can feel and most importantly, love. Just because these are some of the trends we follow doesn’t mean you have to follow them too. Who knows. If you create your own style, we might be wearing what you see as fashion in the next few months!
