Having a baby is one of the most exciting times in life, but it can also be one of the most confusing. From the moment you find out you’re pregnant and even beyond the moment you bring your bundle home, you’re overwhelmed with choices and options about what to buy. From decisions about disposable or cloth diapers to endless variations on bottles, figuring out what to get is complicated.
And while everyone’s lifestyle differences ultimately influence what goes on the list, here are a few absolute must-have’s to buy now or stick on the registry as well as some items all expectant mothers should have.
For the Mommy-to-Be
Moisturizer. It sounds crazy but as your body undergoes changes that allow your baby to grow, your skin will also go through some changes—sometimes becoming more sensitive than it was before you got pregnant. One of the best ways to deal with this is a good moisturizer. Look for one that is good for sensitive skin and contains sunscreen. One great option is Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer SPF 30. It’s inexpensive, lightweight, and even helps with dark spots. It’s a definite plus for women experiencing pregnancy skin pigmentation.
Comfortable Underwear. Underwear? Yes, underwear. Stretchy and forgiving pants are usually among the first things pregnant women think of when it comes to maternity clothes, but underwear are every bit as important. As your body grows and changes, having comfortable underwear can really make or break your day, especially in those later months. One brand that consistently gets rave comments on pregnancy message boards is Hanky Panky. They come in a variety of colors, shapes, styles, and even better, size ranges. These are great even for plus size mamas!
Pregnancy Pillow. Continuing the comfort theme, sleeping peacefully can be a real challenge, both while pregnant and after delivery. Getting comfortable can be difficult, plain and simple. One of the best ways to help get a good night’s sleep is to invest in a pregnancy pillow. A great option is the Boppy Custom Fit Total Body Pillow. Hands down, this item is a game changer. It curves and bends and can be manipulated to support your body exactly where you need it. The best part? You can use it even after the baby is here.
For the Baby
Plain bodysuits. Most people will find themselves inundated with cute baby clothes from friends, relatives, and shower-goers. There is absolutely nothing wrong with cute baby clothes, but if you ask any seasoned mom they will tell you that the item of clothing that they never have enough of is the plain, basic bodysuit. You’ll want to be sure that you have several because babies go through clothes, but also have them in several sizes. Little ones grow fast so it’s important to be prepared. Carter’s has several varieties and styles to choose from.

A nose cleaner. Babies are just like their bigger, grown up counterparts in that they too get congested. Unlike grown ups, however, babies can’t just blow their nose. This is where the nose cleaner, sometimes disgustingly called a snot sucker comes in. The best reviewed option out there is by Nosefrida and you’ll definitely want to make sure you have one handy before it’s needed.
Bibs. You will get a few of these from family and friends, but you will never have enough. Might as well stock up on cute ones in advance of the baby’s arrival. Look for bibs that are easily cleaned up, but don’t hesitate to buy cute ones. The cute bib might be your baby’s statement accessory on those simple bodysuits you stocked up on. A great place to find cute bibs? Target. They have a good assortment.
Something cute and special. This is technically an item that can go on the Mommy-to Be list, too. Having a baby is absolutely a stressful time, but it is also very special. It’s okay to not be practical all the time. Be sure to pick out something special for yourself and baby, be it a great diaper bag or even a special blanket you know your child will grow with or that will become a special keepsake down the line.
