Last night Barry went into the Speed Force to save Wally. But the Speed Force isn’t exactly a friendly place. Was Barry able to save Wally? And what did the Scarlet Speedster encounter while there? Spoilers for last night’s episode beyond this point.
We open with Barry instructing Cisco to get ready. They need the breach room because Barry has decided to go back into the Speed Force on a rescue mission for Wally. Of course since this is a second trip the team knows that the Speed Force is a dangerous place so HR and Cisco decide to build a device that crosses dimensions and can bring Barry back if he finds himself in trouble. Julian contributes by making a device that will track Barry’s vital signs. Another situation that bears monitoring? Barry and Iris’ relationship. He notices that she’s not wearing her ring and it’s clear that she’s called off their engagement.
Sad and defeated personally, but determined to bring Wally home, Barry has Cisco vibe him into the Speed Force. Barry lands in the Speed Force’s version of the police station and is confronted with Eddie Thawne. Right in the feels, Eddie explains how Iris’ life was supposed to be different, how Eddie’s life was supposed to be different, but instead Eddie’s dead. He also explains that Wally is there, but in a prison that future Barry created.
Back at STAR Jesse wants to know if Cisco has figured out how to track Savitar’s location. Jesse wants to go after Savitar, but Cisco says he’s not helping her. Instead, Cisco wants to wait for Barry and Wally to return. While Jesse tries to get Cisco’s help Iris goes into the vault and looks at the headline from the future that was once hers. She tells Joe that she’s concerned she made a mistake breaking off her engagement and Joe tells her she needs to search her heart to know what to do for sure.
In the Speed Force, Eddie agrees to let Wally find Barry if he can make it through the elevator. And the elevator is being guarded by a Time Wraith. Barry gives chase and narrowly makes it into the elevator. When it opens he hears a baby crying. Barry follows the crying right to Caitlin holding a baby. Ronnie is also there, pointing out that his life could have been different, too. Barry tells Ronnie that he wants to sacrifice himself for Wally. As he does Zoom knocks Barry down. Except Zoom is now looking like he’s been eaten by the Time Wraith and Barry ends up pinned down. Ronnie tells Barry that Wally can’t be freed unless Barry is freed from his own torment. Using the device Cisco made, Barry disintegrates Zoom by sticking it on him.
Barry then wakes up and finds Wally. They’re at the hospital and Wally is standing, staring at an empty bed. Barry goes to open the door, but Leonard Snart blasts the door with his cold gun. Snart explains that Wally’s prison is that he’s stuck in a temporal loop watching his mother die over and over and over. Snart and Barry banter a bit before Snart freezes Barry to the wall. Before Snart can shoot him again, though, Jay Garrick shows up.
Back on Earth-1 Jesse, frustrated that everyone thinks she needs to wait for Barry to return, punches HR and goes after Savitar. The claw takes her right to the villain and a fight ensues. However, HR is on the communicator and suggests to Jesse that she should find a vulnerability to his armor. So she does, stabbing the claw into Savitar’s neck. Savitar leaves and Jesse sort of wins the day.
In the Speed Force, Jay explains to Barry that when the tracker went out Cisco came and asked for help. After defeating Snart the two speedsters break Wally from his jail. However, as Barry and Wally start to leave they both notice that Jay isn’t coming with them. It’s then that Jay reveals that he is taking Wally’s place. Barry isn’t able to convince Jay to leave and Jay gives Barry his helmet. It’s what will get them home.
Back home Barry tells everyone that Wally needs a break and that he will have to be the one to save Iris. Jesse catches up with Wally and tells him that she’s going to go take Jay’s place on Earth-3. After brief goodbyes, Cisco sends Jesse off. After she leaves, HR shares with the team that they’ve now confirmed that there’s a person underneath Savitar’s armor and that person feels pain.
Then Barry goes home to talk to Iris. She tells him that she loves him and wants to marry him, but Barry admits that he proposed because he thought that would save her. Barry then tells her that they need space and he’ll stay with Cisco. Iris walks away.
Next week? Musical crossover! Here’s to hoping that cheers us up after the seeming breakup of Iris and Barry. Until then!
