3 Easy and Cheap DIY Projects to Brighten up Your Home for Fall

Fall is just around the corner which means cooler temperatures, an endless variety of pumpkin spice delights and, of course, fun fall DIY projects!

While there’s never a bad season to craft cute things for your space the fall season just happens to be an excellent time to find inexpensive supplies at your local discount or dollar store that allow you to make beautiful crafts that look expensive even if they did anything but break the bank. Need a little inspiration? Here are three simple, fall-themed DIY projects you can make using things available on the cheap.

Pumpkin Pillars

For this project, you’ll need three pillar-style candle holders (you can choose all one height or varied heights), three small pumpkins, a black permanent marker, and if you want to change the color of your pumpkins you’ll want to get a can of white spray paint and some painter’s tape.

If you want to change the color of your pumpkins to white to create a “blank canvas” for your project you will want to carefully wrap the stems in painter’s tape first, then take your pumpkins outside and spray the evenly with white paint then let them dry. Once they are dry (or if you are using the pumpkins without painting them first,) trace onto the pumpkin what you want to do in black. “Boo” is a popular choice to make for a fun, Halloween project, but you can also do leaves, your initials, anything really! Once you have your tracing done, go over it with a black permanent marker. Then you can arrange your pumpkins on the pillar-style candle holders and arrange as you please.  You can even add leaves or other foliage around the base of the pillars for an even more fall flair!

Fabric or Washi Tape Pumpkins

For this project, you will need a pumpkin in your choice of size (we suggest a small pumpkin,) and some fabric tape. If you can’t find fabric tape, washi tape or even cool printed duct tape will work as well.

This might be the easiest diy project ever. Simply take a piece of tape, line it up on your pumpkin vertically. If it’s fabric tape you will need to cut the tape at a length that will cover the full side from the top by the stem to the center of the bottom of the pumpkin. Once you have your tape the right length, just apply and repeat with each piece of tape overlapping a little until you transform your pumpkin! This project works best on plastic or ceramic pumpkins, but you can use it on real ones, too.

“Bleeding” Candles

For this project, you will need a white candle and a red taper candle and a lighter.

Pumpkins aren’t everyone’s thing so for those looking for something a little bit more spooky for Halloween, a bleeding candle is really cool and simple craft project. Put down some sort of protective covering on whatever surface you’re working on then sit your white candle down. Then, take the red taper candle and light it. Once it starts burning and melting, tip it to the side and hold it over the white candle. The red wax will drip onto the candle below and make it look like the white candle is bleeding. You can also do this with other colors of candles. Black and white or even black and red make for a neat effect. Of course, as with any project involving fire, be careful! You want a cool candle, not a bad burn.
