Last night, Barry tried to prove his hunch that Clifford DeVoe is a threat and we got to see how the frail man in a wheelchair last episode became The Thinker. Spoilers for “Therefore I Am” from here on!

We open with a flashback at Central City University and a non-wheelchair bound DeVoe is giving a lecture but no one is paying attention. They’re on their cell phones instead. Class ends and DeVoe is approached by the woman we know as The Mechanic and they talk about his plans for something called The Thinking Cap that will allow him to expand his mind.

Back in the present, Joe and Barry are talking to DeVoe and his wife about those impacted by Dark Matter and while they talk, Barry notices a samurai poster on the wall. When Barry asks, DeVoe says he speaks many languages and has lived all over the world. At STAR, Barry tries to convince the team that something is off with DeVoe.

In another flashback, DeVoe sees Harrison Wells from season one on television talking about the particle accelerator. He tells his wife that the particle accelerator could power that thinking cap. Back in the present, DeVoe lecture his class and notices Barry. Barry questions him again once class is out but DeVoe denies knowledge of where he was when the particle accelerator exploded. Barry, frustrated, steals his mug using superspeed. He taktes it to STAR for analysis, but there’s no meta DNA and Cisco gets nothing when he vibes it.

Flashback again. Wells is speaking at a press conference before the accelerator is turned on and DeVoe’s wife pretends to be a reporter to ask a question. Wells recognizes her name and says he respects DeVoe’s work. Outside, DeVoe and his wife realize the accelerator will fail and decide to use it to become metahuman. DeVoe stands in just the right spot, puts on his prototype thinking cap and is struck by dark matter. And lightning. He appears dead for a moment, but wakes up.

Back in the present, the DeVoes have filed a complaint against Barry with the CCPD. They claim Barry is harassing him. At STAR, Iris stops by with burgers and discovers Barry is still investigating them. She tries to talk him out of it.

Another flashback. Turns out that thinking cap and the dark matter has given DeVoe crazy intelligence. It also causes him to have a horrible seizure. Meanwhile in the present, Barry figures out that the samuroid has a camera in it and goes over to the DeVoe house to snoop. He manages to sneak in and then out before DeVoe’s wife comes home, but she still notices something is off.

Back to the past, the DeVoes go to the doctor and discover that he has an advanced and aggressive variation on ALS. DeVoe figures out that is massive brain power is killing off his muscles for power. In the present, Barry tries to convince the team of what he’s found, but they don’t believe him…and then Joe calls him into work. At the station, DeVoe’s wife is crying to Singh. Turns out their security cameras caught Barry breaking in. Barry gets suspended for two weeks and the DeVoes take out a restraining order against him.

However, that doesn’t stop Barry from going to talk to DeVoe at the university and DeVoe reveals all: he knows Barry is The Flash, Team Flash can’t stop him, he’s the fastest mind alive, and oh, by the way, congratulations on the wedding. Back at the lab, Barry tells the team everything he now knows. Cicso names DeVow “The Thinker” but before things get to heavy, Wally comes home in time for the wedding.

And back at the DeVoe residence? The Thinker and the Mechanic are back in the lair. The Thinker has been out of his special chair too long and his body is seizing, but he quickly gets plugged back in.

Next week? Crossover! See you then!
