A story that’s three parts Lord of the Flies and one (tiny) part Labyrinth may seem derivative, dull and unnecessary. But with an interesting cast of characters, intense action sequences, and the hints and promises of a much bigger world outside the one we’re introduced to, The Maze Runner is a fast-paced and solid new […]
Janna Does TIFF: Reviews from the Second Weekend
As an avid film-goer, the Toronto International Film Festival is my favourite time of year. As always, this year’s festival has a diverse lineup of interesting, captivating films—and it’s impossible for anyone to see them all. But I’ve seen my fair share, and below you’ll find reviews for some of the most talked-about films from the […]
Letting the Wrong One In: “No Good Deed”
A home invasion is one of the most terrifying crimes to endure. Returning to a burglarized home after a vacation feels like a violation. The only balm for this kind of wound is the knowledge that your loved ones weren’t home when it happened. A home invasion during a storm while your spouse is away […]

SYTYCD11: And The Winner Is…
Season 11 was a season that began with so much promise. On the heels of an unexpected renewal, Nigel & Co. chose a Top 20 that was young, versatile and full of personality. Tappers! Hip-hoppers! Ballet! And so much ballroom! I really thought that maybe, just maybe we’d get back to the show that it […]
SYTYCD11: Summing Up The Last 2 Weeks Before the Finale
Because there were no results following the Top 6 show, I thought I’d review both the Top 6 and Top 4 together before Wednesday night’s big finale where one of the remaining four contestants will be crowned Season 11’s winner. We’ll get to who I think it will be, but first let’s talk about the […]

“WHAT IF”: A Rom-Com That Won’t Give You Cavities
Can men and women really be just friends? It’s a question as old as time, almost, and one that’s been posed in dozens upon dozens of romantic comedies. It’s clichéd, it’s tired, and it’s been proven untrue countless times. But this month’s new romantic comedy, What If, asks a slightly different question: can a man […]
Third Time’s Not the Charm: The Expendables 3
The first installment of The Expendables blasted into theaters in 2010 with an ensemble cast of actors from two decades of action films. Sylvester Stallone tapped known action stars like Bruce Willis, Dolph Lundgren and added newer stars and mixed martial artists like Jason Statham, Terry Crews, Randy Couture and Jet Li. The idea wasn’t […]
Canadian Pride: WHAT IF’s Meghan Heffern
For Canadian actors in the film and television industry, their options seem relatively clear-cut: work in the Canadian film scene, work on American projects shot in Canada, or move to the States to try and make a career in Hollywood. So when a project comes along that’s shot and set in Canada, features big-name talent, […]
Remembering Robin Williams
Earlier this week, the death of actor and comedian, Robin Williams stunned not just his many fans around the world, but his family, close friends and co-stars from the film industry. Williams, 63, committed suicide in his California home on August 11—a death that came as an incredible shock to those that knew the certified comic genius. It was reported in the last few months that Williams was battling severe depression, and most recently revealed by his wife, Susan Schneider, that he was in the early stages of Parkinson’s Disease.
SYTYCD11: Shaking the Top 8 Shocker
For as long as I’ve watched SYTYCD, I’ve had to brace myself for Top 8 week. It’s a time when half the remaining dancers are in danger and so, anything could happen. One routine that isn’t well-received could spell the end for an otherwise great dancer. Such was the case for the now-dynamic all-star, Allison […]
SYTYCD11: With the All-Stars, Come New Stars
After last week’s shocking elimination, I knew that the only thing that could make it right this week would be some stellar dancing. The night opened with an interesting “Neon Cowboy” routine (as Nigel dubbed it) set to the fresh-off-the-press Nicki Minaj + Jessie J + Ariana Grande collab “Bang Bang”. While the routine was […]
