Movie Review: An Impressive Battle Royale in ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’

After an on-going controversy stemming from its initial production and casting, the highly anticipated Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice finally opened up last Friday. Although the gladiator matchup of the ages left critics with a bad taste in their mouth and less than kind reviews, the film racked up a little more than an […]

Movie Review: Deadpool – The Merc Puts The Money Where His Mouth Is

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has built its reputation on well-written, well-acted blockbuster films that are both entertaining and serious, while elevating the “comic book superhero movie” to something just a little more. With Deadpool, Marvel deviates from that formula with a film about a decidedly not heroic mercenary with a foul mouth, a love of […]

The Force Is Strong With ‘Star Wars Episode VII’

It’s hard to know where to begin when reviewing Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens. Possibly one of the most anticipated movies of all time, The Force Awakens had a lot to live up to, and it delivered and then some. Probably one of the strongest outings from the Star Wars franchise, and definitely surpassing the prequels, the movie was a nice mix of new characters and plot lines along with a healthy dose of nostalgia.

In October 2013, Marvel Studios announced the preparation of four drama series and a miniseries totaling sixty episodes for release through Netflix.  Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist were announced as the properties to find life on the small screen. Marvel’s Daredevil released this past April to popular acclaim, centering around the dark and detailed […]

Movie Review: ‘Crimson Peak’ – The Haunting (Struggle) Is Real

Haunted houses are one of Halloween’s biggest attractions. Creepy creatures hide around each corner waiting to jump–scare the unsuspecting visitor half out of their shoes. When all is said and done, everyone laughs at the diversion and goes home happy. A few of us even hide under the blankets just in case there really is […]

Movie Review: ‘Everest’ – All About That Base (Camp)

Many people dream of climbing mountains, but few people ever experience the rush. It’s about more than finding a trail and following it to the top. Professional climbers, and those that guide them, must school themselves in a number of safety precautions for years before making the attempt. Add to this the excellent physical shape […]

The Scorch Trials: Can Sequels Live up to the Originals?

Last year, in keeping with the YA books-turned-movies theme that has become so popular in the past decade, we saw James Dashner’s The Maze Runner brought to life on the big screen. I reviewed the film back in September, and found it enjoyable and entertaining, with a solid cast to make up for the sometimes-confusing story. This […]

Braving ‘The Comment Section’ with Michael Kosta

With the rise of social media in recent years, a new species of users has crawled out from the shadowy depths of the Internet, turning the web into the “wild west” of sorts for aggressive and insolent verbal slinging. While perusing the comment section of any article on a news site, the unremitting stream of […]

Movie Review: The Not-So-‘Fantastic Four’

The Fantastic Four is my favorite superhero team in the Marvel Universe. When I started reading comics, I loved X-Men and the Avengers, but was captivated by the idea of family that journeyed into the unknown together. They had differences and good times like any family, and they also beat up bad guys. No matter […]

Marvel’s Tiniest Superhero Makes a Big Impression in ‘Ant-Man’

Warning: this review contains spoilers.  Ant-Man, right? What kind of superhero is that? Though Marvel’s latest superhero might sound a little ridiculous, and even he’ll admit that the name is, the little guy packs quite a punch. Paul Rudd stars as Scott Lang, recruited by the original Ant-Man, Hank Pym, played by Michael Douglas, to […]

Movie Review: ‘Terminator Genisys’ – He’s Back!

James Cameron’s The Terminator stormed the box office in 1984 with a story of time-travel, choice versus fate, and human heroes fighting against an implacable and unstoppable villain. Arnold Schwarzenegger, already popular from the Conan films, solidified his status as a bankable box office star. Linda Hamilton, and Michael Biehn, along with their characters of […]

Movie Review: A Defining and Bold ‘Testament of Youth’

One of the beauties of cinema is how it can so beautifully encapsulate and highlight what has affected us most. In paying respects to war, Hollywood films have helped throughout the years to acknowledge the sacrifice so many before us have made for our freedoms. The twentieth century’s pervading legacy has been about war, with […]
