Movie Review: About a (Robot) Boy – “Chappie”
The science–fiction genre is filled with several examples of creatures that are more human than human beings. Most of them come across as heavy–handed morality tales that leave audiences wondering why they spent time and money being lectured on why humans and corporations are terrible, yet the things humans and corporations create are not. Movies […]

Julianne Moore is Unforgettable in “Still Alice”
Hollywood has long been fascinated with bringing a tinge of real life to film in hopes to connect with audiences. While it is a fundamental element in successful film-making, it’s also prised by many who value the subject matter in hopes to spark a discussion that is important. Based on the 2007 New York Times best-selling novel of the same name by neuroscientist and writer Lisa Genova, Still Alice is more than just a film about the struggle of Alzheimer’s. In many ways, it is a harrowing tale of family, love and the effects on our lives from this debilitating disease.
An Inevitable Ending – “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies”
The Lord of the Rings isn’t the first fantasy epic book to grace the big screen, but it is certainly one of the most expansive. Many of the characters have stories upon stories written about their exploits prior to the War of the Ring, the focus of the first trilogy. When that trilogy ended in […]
Hard Times In Memphis – “Exodus: Gods and Kings”
“Let My People Go.” Those words have inspired spirituals and songs for years. The story behind those songs, that of the freeing of the Hebrews from slavery in Egypt, isn’t as well known in popular culture. Love, Time, and Black Holes: A Review of Interstellar
Last Friday night I went to the movie theater. I grabbed some somewhat over-priced snacks, found the IMAX auditorium, located my comfy, leather recliner-style seat, and settled in to watch Christopher Nolan’s highly-anticipated Interstellar. Clocking in at nearly three hours long I knew that it was going to be a long movie. What I didn’t […]

Secrets Have a Way of Surfacing: “Gone Girl”
There is something hauntingly incongruous about the juxtaposition of lush, rolling green hills, leafy expanses of riverbank, and decaying Southern town with a sudden disappearance-feared-horrible-murder and yet director David Fincher manages to fit those things together flawlessly in the film adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl. If you haven’t read the book or seen the film please be aware that there may be spoilers in this review.
Movie Review: “A Walk Among the Tombstones”
I was hooked the moment I saw the first trailer for A Walk Among the Tombstones. Liam Neeson waging a one–man war on criminals in the vein of Taken? Check. Bad guys who need to be taken out in the worst way? Check. Scrappy young sidekick lending a hand? Check.
