The air is crisp and fresh like paint
Smoothly smothered, very faint.
Creamily colored and soft to see
Whispered words rise rarely.
Chairs are scattered ’round the room
Faces gaunt and bored with gloom.
To leave before a task’s complete?
Admitting loss, failure, defeat.
And if I rose and drew a knife,
And threatened to end, the dear air’s life.
It wouldn’t flinch or move a muscle,
Cause a commotion or a hustle.
It’d call my bluff and stand up straight
Instead of falling for my bait.
The doors would lock, the windows shut
And all before my knife could cut…
And whispering, coming, from each wall,
A voice would say, “Shhh! STUDY HALL…”
