CNN Announces New Morning Show with Chris Cuomo, Kate Bolduan and Michaela Pereira

As if there wasn’t enough talk this week about morning show shuffles with Anderson Cooper possibly replacing Matt Lauer on The Today Show, CNN has officially announced in a press release from earlier this morning that Chris Cuomo and Kate Bolduan will co-host the network’s new morning show set to premiere this spring. In addition, Michaela Pereira of Los Angeles’ KTLA Morning News has been tapped as news anchor for the program.

“I’ve been looking forward to this announcement since I first joined CNN,” said President of CNN Worldwide Jeff Zucker. “Chris, Kate and Michaela are a dynamic team that will give our viewers in America a new way to start their day. We were floored with excitement when we saw Chris and Kate together on screen, and by adding Michaela to the mix we feel we have something very special. We believe there is an opening to do news in the morning with a fresh, new voice.”

Chris Cuomo, 42 who joined CNN this past January, was previously co-anchor of ABC’s 20/20 with Elizabeth Vargas, along with being news anchor for the network’s morning show, Good Morning America. During his time with ABC News, the New York native was the chief law and justice correspondent and received multiple Emmy Award nominations for his work. He became one of the youngest correspondents in network news history to receive a News Emmy for his profile on Good Morning America of 12 year-old-poet, Mattie Stepanek. Throughout his career, Cuomo has received numerous industry accolades for his investigative reporting including a Polk and Peabody Award for team coverage, as well as his work being spread out to receive acclaim in areas of business (Loeb Award), legalities (the American Bar Association Silver Gavel Award for investigating juvenile justice) and breaking news (Edward R. Murrow Award).

Since joining CNN, Cuomo been a field anchor and covered events ranging from the papal conclave to the State of the Union.

“This has been a rare pleasure for me,” Cuomo said today. “Meeting Kate and Michaela on screen and off, I knew right away that this is my TV family.”

Kate Bolduan, has been working at CNN since 2007, where she initially worked as a national correspondent for CNN Newsource. During her time with Newsource, the Indiana native provided breaking news coverage and feature reports for more than 800 CNN affiliates. She had the chance to cover the 2008 presidential election and was given the opportunity to travel throughout the United States and cover such national headlines like the Minneapolis bridge collapse, OJ Simpson’s armed robbery case, and the launches and landings of the retiring NASA space shuttle fleet. Bolduan has proven roots mean something to her as in 2010 she took a look at the trickle-down effect stimulus money had on local economies. During the week-long series, she featured her hometown of Goshen and kept it real as she spoke to municipal officials, small businesses in town and headed back to Goshen High School.

Since last year, she has been co-anchoring The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer, and has served as one of CNN’s congressional correspondents, covering various activities of the US House and Senate.

Bolduan who is just 29, will be the youngest morning host on any major television network and will move this spring from Washington to New York for the new job.

“It is a huge opportunity to work on this new show,” said Bolduan in the CNN announcement. “Knowing that we have the resources of some of the most experienced executives in the business, the backing of a brand like CNN, and to be able to sit alongside such great people as Chris and Michaela – I can’t think of a better combination.”

Michaela Pereira, 42, formerly of KTLA5’s Morning Show will be joining CNN in New York later this spring. Pereira, a Saskatchewan native, was one of KTLA5’s most renowned and respected local news anchors. After joining the network in 2004, she fast became a favorite with viewers on LA’s top rated local morning newscast, and won the program 10 Emmy Awards for “Best Regularly Scheduled Daily News”. In 2007 and 2008, she co-hosted the coverage of the Tournament of Roses Parade with former game show host, Bob Eubanks of The Newlywed Game, which garnered the network three more Emmys, this time for coverage of the parade. In addition, she has been awarded with three Radio & TV News Association Golden Mike Awards and two Mark Twain Awards. Pereira honors philanthropy, serving on several boards such as EmpowerTech, helping people with disabilities; Optimist Youth Home, offering aid to troubled youth; and the Long Beach Boys and Girls Club, just to name a few.

“I couldn’t be more excited to join the CNN family and have the opportunity to be part of a brand new morning team,” Pereira said. “As a veteran of morning television being part of this new endeavor is a dream come true.”

It was speculated months ago that Erin Burnett would sit in with Chris Cuomo for the morning show, but the New York Times reported this morning that it didn’t work out due to Burnett’s “unwillingness” to move into a morning time slot. Whatever the case, it seems this new pairing of Cuomo and Bolduan opens up for a brand new audience that is different by generation, but fundamentally the same, as both reporters have true dedication and have continuously shown great integrity with warm character.

As a consistent news watcher and fan of both Chris Cuomo and Kate Bolduan’s, I can’t wait to watch! They have been my favorite anchors for quite some time and as someone who loves morning television, I think their union will not only be something unique and original, but surely an exciting one to watch.

Further details of the morning show will be released in the coming weeks leading up to the show’s debut this spring.
