American Idol XIV: Auditions #8 – San Francisco, CA

Our writer and Idol expert, Andrew Rogers is back this season covering the popular FOX reality show, “American Idol“. The pressure is on and the stakes are high as the musical competition searches for a real superstar in its fourteenth year. With weekly recaps discussing the contestants’ performances and choices, Rogers looks ahead at what’s in-store each week in his exclusive Idol recap series.

Night two in San Francisco, and the final night of auditions for this season, boasted some interesting talent. Great voices came from the most unexpected places and, as usual, the episode was injected with plenty of humor and insightful critiques from the panel. All in all, this year’s audition were far more painless than years past. But let’s get right down to the talent with the potential to make the coveted Top 24:

Adanna Duru (17) singing “You & I” (Lady Gaga) – Adanna was one of those unexpected talents tonight. She came in as a cute girl with a good personality, but I didn’t expect much more than a pleasant voice from her, especially when she chose a Gaga ballad to take on. But her voice rose to the occasion and the soul and power she displayed while singing the song made me think she’s got some maturity beyond her years.

Daniel Seavey (15) singing “Hallelujah” (Leonard Cohen) and “Straight Up” (Paula Abdul) – I’m still questioning whether Daniel actually passes the age limit for the competition, but he’s definitely adorable in an “aw shucks” kind of way and his Paula Abdul cover showed a bit of that raspy quality that he’s beginning to grow into. Do I think Daniel might get eaten alive in Hollywood? Absolutely. Am I willing to give him a shot and hope his unique talent stands out? Yes I am.

Tyanna Jones (16) sings “Wings”. [Credit: FOX Entertainment]

Tyanna Jones (16) singing “Wings” (Little Mix) – Tyanna, like Daniel and Adanna, had that likeability factor down-pat from the second she walked through the door. The stories of her mother’s struggles to raise 12 kids made it hard not to root for her, but her talent did all the legwork as she handled an acapella version of a pop song with ease and then proceeded to critique herself when pressed by the judges. Now that’s a kid who knows her stuff. Let’s see what she’ll do in the weeks to come.

We also saw Hunter Larsen (20) who sang “That’s Life” (Frank Sinatra), Rocky Peter (27) who sang an original called “Wrong Places” and Jaq Mackenzie (15) who sang an original called “You Waste My Time”. Hunter, like the judges said, definitely had that Pink thing going for her and was reminiscent of Erika Van Pelt from Season 11, which made me like her all the more. Rocky, with his heartbreaking back story and lilting tone, made him an easy yes for the judges, but I’m left with some reservations about how much more he can do. As for Jaq, I would have liked to hear her sing another song during her audition because I felt her original song was too repetitive and one-note for me to get a sense of what else she can do. But she definitely does have a unique voice reminiscent of last season’s Jena Irene that might make her a shoo-in.

That’s all there is to say about tonight’s talent. Next week, we’ll see some of the names and faces from the past eight episodes as the fight their way through Hollywood Week for a spot in the Top 24. It should be interesting, as it always is, when frontrunners fall to pieces and new stars emerge. For now, let me know what you thought of tonight’s show and who some of your favorites are now that the auditions have come to an end.
