Coffee Guide: Kansas City

When people think about Kansas City food they most commonly think about steak and barbecue. While the greater Kansas City area does do both and do them well, its surrounding suburbs have a thriving coffee culture with popular caffeine crawls and custom roasters. Kansas City is even home to Pete Licata, 2013 World Barista Champion. Getting a great cup of joe is almost as guaranteed as getting some great ribs in this metropolitan area, but when you’re needing that latte, espresso, or even a regular drip coffee don’t settle for just any shop. We’ve got a guide to some of the best on both sides of the state line.

Quay Coffee

Address: 412 Delaware St, Kansas City, MO

Located Kansas City’s River Market and pronounced “key,” Quay Coffee is stripped-down experience from the moment you walk in the door. They have one goal: to deliver amazing coffee so if you’re expecting to find fancy coffee drinks look again. Quay boasts a simple menu of classic beverages made right every single time. Quay also offers a nice selection of local pastries to go with your perfect cup.

Filling Station Coffee

Address: 2980 McGee Trafficway, Kansas City, MO

Coffee from a converted old filling station? Absolutely. Filling Station Coffee actually has three locations in the Kansas City area and all are equally cool with their creative, re-purposed vibe. And they aren’t just great coffee and espresso. The Filling Station serves a great variety of pastries, juices, and locally-sourced food offerings. You can come in for your morning jolt of coffee and come back for a great sandwich for lunch. And if you’re into clever coffee swag check out their merch.

Black Dog Coffeehouse

Address:  12815 W 87th Street Pkwy Lenexa, KS

Great coffee isn’t just found on the Missouri side of the state line. The suburbs on the Kansas side have some great offerings as well and Black Dog Coffeehouse is top among them. With a balanced menu of well-crafted coffee drinks and traditional espresso as well as live music on Saturday nights, Black Dog is a popular gathering place and a must-try. Feeling hungry? Black Dog has a partnership with Ibis Bakery next door for incredible artisan toast and other baked goods (and you can buy the bread to go!)

Address: 11030 Quivira Rd., Overland Park, KS

Looking for a straightforward, fresh cup of coffee? Look no further than Revocup. Revocup features an amazing assortment of single-origin coffee beans and espresso-based drinks expertly made. Nestled in a suburban shopping center, but across from the expansive Johnson County Community College, Revocup has a raw, authentic college coffee shop feel with not only incredible lattes but a real community feel. Buy a bag of beans to take with you, you will not be disappointed.
