5 Fun Ways to Spend the Rest of Summer

In what might induce a flurry of groans and moans, the end of summer is right around the corner. The longer hours of daylight might have been beneficial to a lot of us as we planned sunny vacations and outings with family and friends, but the popular and all-around favorite season is sadly drawing to a close. While the change in temperature might create a more structured or somber mood among adventure-seekers, there are fun and efficient ways to get the most out of those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer.

As we transition to fall and welcome a new season in mid-September, we encourage you to add a little zest in your step before summer officially ends. After all, there is still plenty of time to truly enjoy this beautiful weather and all the season has to offer. Before the leaves fall and the smell of pumpkin spice dances in the air, we share five exciting ways to help you make the most of the rest of summer before it officially sneaks off into autumn.

Try a staycation

One of the best ways to make the most of these last days of summer is to just get away from the responsibilities of your weekly routine. A weekend away can be a ton of fun, but a weekend in, can be one of the more economic and efficient ways to really sit back with your summer plans. Not only will you spend less money, but you won’t be exhausted from all the travel and you can customize it the way you want. From becoming a tourist in your own backyard to spending an afternoon lounging on your patio with a good book, the options are endless. Peruse your town or city’s local calendar for inspiration or hit up a state fair! If you have kids or just want to be romantic with your significant other, camp in your backyard and stargaze.

Plan a BBQ party

If you’re a social body, you might just want to make the most of these last days of summer by breaking out the grill and inviting friends over. Not only is a backyard barbecue incredibly fun, but it’s the perfect way to bid farewell to the warmer, sunny season.

Escape for a weekend to the lake

If you haven’t already, it’s time to hit the lake this summer. Lake getaways are not only fun and affordable, but with the U.S. boasting a diverse and gorgeous range of amazing lakes in every state, there is ample opportunity for not just swimming and tanning, but fishing, boating and exciting activities on and off, or away from the water with plenty of places to stay, eat or camp at. And did we mention how romantic it can be?

Plan a beach day

Get the lawn chairs, umbrellas and grab your sunnies because it’s time to hit the beach! Not only is a day at the beach fun and exciting, but it has been proven by the Journal of Environmental Psychology to boast restorative health benefits. While we know the sunshine provides a rich source of vitamin D, the Scholars Research Library found water, which contains high levels of various minerals like magnesium, potassium and iodine, help to fight off infection and offer therapeutic effects that allow the body to heal and detoxify. Moreover, the same study pointed to how swimming and water-based exercise helps decrease anxiety and depression.

Get creative with a DIY

We absolutely love Pinterest, so one of the best ways to enjoy the rest of summer is to take up a DIY project that helps to not only beautify your home and prepare it for the fall, but lets you soak in the remainder of the season by keeping busy. From do-it-yourself curtains, to pool party fun, to re-purposed patio furniture, there are endless options to choose from when you want to get creative that are dependent on how memorable you want to make those last days of summer.
