Welcome back! What’s a Super show without the Luthor family? This week we get to dig deeper into iconic Super/Luthor family relationship. Kara and Lena are already friends, but how will that friendship work if Lena is following in her brother’s footsteps? As always we have spoilers beyond this point.
Last night’s episode opens with a flashback. Young Lex Luthor is playing chess with his mom when his father, Lionel, comes home with a little Lena. Lena is there to live with them going forward so Lex introduces himself and asks the little girl if she wants to play chess. Back in the present the gang is at the alien bar where Kara watches the news regarding Mama Luthor’s trial. Winn and James have theories about Alex’s new squeeze and are surprised when Alex arrives with Maggie. J’onn, of course, already knew. Maggie makes herself friendly with the group by challenging Winn to some pool while Kara muses that she should check on Lena.
When Kara visits Lena, Lena says that her mom wants to see her. Lena is reluctant to visit Lillian, but Kara says she should to tell her how she really feels. Lena has the opportunity to do so as her parents are alive while Kara’s are not. Lena does go, but at first Lillian is just awful to her. After a bit, though, Lillian apologizes and drops a bombshell: Lionel Luthor is Lena’s real father as Lena was the result of an affair. Lillian declares Lena a true Luthor and asks for a second chance. Meanwhile in another part of the prison Metallo gets mail and inside the envelope is kryptonite.
The next day in court Metallo is supposed to testify against Lillian, but instead he goes on an anti-alien rant. Metallo declares Lillian the only person trying to save the planet. The prosecutor tries to have Metallo declared a hostile witness, but Metallo in turn blasts her with a kryptonite ray from his chest before freeing Lillian and fleeing the courtroom. Kara, as Supergirl, gives chase, but Metallo attacks innocent bystanders with a crane and Supergirl chooses to save the innocents instead.
At the DEO, Maggie gets a call from the prison where they tell her that Metallo acquired the kryptonite the previous evening. And on that evening there was only one visitor and that visitor was Lena Luthor. Kara goes to see Lena and asks about Metallo’s escape. This doesn’t sit well with Lena, and Maggie arrives with video proof that Lena had the kryptonite. Looking really guilty, Lena is arrested by Maggie.
Lena Luthor being arrested is definitely news and at CatCo Snapper and James think she should be on the front cover of the magazine. Kara disagrees and is worried about Lena’s reputation. James overrules, saying that Lena is guilty and he will prove it. Before Kara leaves she also runs into James’ assistant, Eve. Turns out Eve’s date with Mon-El went really badly because Mon-El could only talk about Kara.
At the prison Metallo tries to break Lena out. Guardian shows up to stop him, but despite a good fight Metallo gets him down. Guardian doesn’t get killed, though, because Metallo’s kryptonite heart is fading. Leaving Guardian alone, Metallo frees Lena and leaves. At the DEO James gets medical attention and notes something isn’t right with Metallo. Alex says the DEO needs to treat Lena as a criminal and Kara is still sticking up for her friend, though James points out that Lex was once Clark’s best friend.
The whole situation is frustrating Kara so she takes that out on concrete blocks. Adding to it, Mon-El shows up, but he points out that Kara believes in people others won’t and that includes himself. This prompts Kara to apologize to Mon-El for being distant and admit to being mad that he dated Eve. Kara gets flustered before she can explain why and leaves.
Meanwhile Lena is with her mom and is pretty sad that no one will believe in her innocence. Lillian says no one believed it anyway before asking Lena to join Cadmus. Metallo’s veins start to glow green. No one notices and Lillian takes Lena to one of Lex’s facilities. It turns out that his arsenal is there and it is locked using biometrics. The only way to get in is Lena’s DNA, but Lena refuses. Cyborg Superman forces her, though, opening up the arsenal and revealing Lex’s war suit. Speaking of Cyborg Superman, Winn figures out that he hacked into LexCorp and altered the video to frame Lena. Winn also is able to track where Metallo is, figuring out that his kryptonite is unstable and he might just blow up at any moment. Kara goes to rescue Lena with Alex warning that Metallow will leave a poison cloud of kryptonite when he goes boom.
Fight time! Supergirl shows up at Lex’s facility only to be overpowered by some of his weapons. Winn warns that the more Metallo uses his powers the faster he will explode. Cyborg and Lillian escape, Metallo knocks out Lena, and then Metallo starts to go critical. In the nick of time J’onn shows up to help. He pulls Metallo way, then grabs Lena with Supergirl and they all escape just as Metallo goes boom.
The next day, Kara gleefully tells Snapper she was right. James apologizes and Kara says that they should be friends again. Kara visits Lena, who tells Kara that no one has ever stood up for her before. As Kara leaves we get another Luthor flashback, this time of Lena beating Lex at chess. And then the episode ties things up with a boy as Mon-El visits Kara at home. Kara admits to pushing him away and thinking that she had to choose between Supergirl and a relationship. Mon-El’s arrival has proven her wrong and maybe she can have it all. Our favorite aliens are about to kiss and Mr. Mxyzptlk pops up declaring love for Supergirl!
Next episode? One of my all-time favorite characters, Mr. Mxyzptlk! See you then!
