Welcome back! After a too-long spring break, we’re finally back with our favorite Scarlet Speedster and it’s all downhill from here as we head towards the season finale. Last we saw Barry he still didn’t know who Savitar was. Last night he got a little closer to that all-important piece of information, but first he had to go back to the future. Spoilers beyond this point!
The episode starts in Barry and Iris’ apartment. He’s trying to figure out where in the future he needs to go and Iris is looking at a photo album. She asks Barry to promise her that he’ll look after her dad and brother should Savitar kill her. Barry is reluctant to do so, but eventually makes the promise. Then the metahuman alarm goes off.
At STAR Labs, Killer Frost is has gone wild. She destroys the necklace that could turn her back into Caitlin and is about to kill Cisco, Julian, and HR, but Barry shows up and saves them. Killer Frosts makes an ice barrier and flees leaving Cisco and Julian to argue briefly about the situation. Barry says they should all take a moment, then tells the team that he’s going to go the future and will be right back. Wally helps him open a portal to the future and Barry lands in 2024.
The moment he lands (and confirms via newspaper where he is) he runs into Mirror Master and Top. The fight is brief and Barry manages to escape, going to his apartment with Iris. It’s in sad shape, but Cisco shows up, happy to see 2017 Barry and explains he saw him on security cameras. They hug and then go to STAR Labs which is also in bad shape. Cisco explains that Barry shut everything down when Iris was killed. As Barry goes further into the lab, Cisco waits in the elevator. Barry then runs into Future Barry who is shaggy and broken. Future Barry doesn’t know how Savitar is and says Iris can’t be saved. He tells regular Barry to go home and make memories with Iris while he still can so regular Barry tries to open up a portal home, but can’t. Cisco can’t answer Barry when he asks why the portal wouldn’t open and then reveals that Killer Frost froze off his hands. Cisco is now powerless.
Upset at Cisco’s fate, Barry asks about everyone else. Julian has Killer Frost incarcerated in his lab. She reveals that she teamed up with Savitar because he gave her what she wanted and that she won’t tell Barry who Savitar is, just that he will be very surprised. Cisco and Barry then go to see Wally, but a nurse answers the door. Wally is wheelchair bound and catatonic. Turns out he went after Savitar and something so horrible happened that Wally has been catatonic since. Then Barry goes to find Joe, who is at Iris’ grave and is upset with Barry. Turns out Barry didn’t keep his promise so Joe feels like he lost all of his children and an upset Joe tells him to leave.
The future is bleak. Barry then realizes that Cisco kept him from going back into the past because Cisco really wants to get the band back together. Given the key to head back home, Barry at first goes to leave but then decides to stay. They need to get the gang back together. So Barry goes about collecting people. He gets Julian from the lab and Joe from home then goes to get HR. HR is now a romance novelist and Jitters is now HR Jitters. Once Barry has everyone at STAR Labs, they get back together as a team just in time for the alarm to go off. Top and Mirror Master are in the middle of a robbery.
Barry goes to fight them, but the two baddies get the upper hand. Cisco is able to modify a device that will render Top and Mirror Master’s powers useless, but they have to get it to him. That’s when 2024 Barry shows up and says he will do it. From then it’s a two Flash party and the bad guys are quickly apprehended. Back at STAR, 2024 Barry admits that they have more work to do, but this was a good step. He and Joe hug. He also tells Barry that a scientists named Tracy Brand helped him trap Savitar in the Speed Force four years after Iris was murdered. He gives regular Barry a drive with the information to take back. Barry returns to the current time and lets the team know that Killer Frost is on Savitar’s team now so the gang decides to stop her before she’s totally lost.
As the episode closes Killer Frost wanders without shoes in the woods where Savitar appears. He says he can cure her so that Caitlin never returns. Caitlin asks why she should trust him. And that’s when Savitar sheds his suit. We only see his feet, but Killer Frost’s eyes get wide and she immediately agrees to whatever he has to say.
Next week? We finally find out who Savitar is! Until then!
