November means National Novel Writing Month is in full swing, but keeping pace to write a novel of 50,000 words in 30 days is hard work. It’s easy to become demotivated and put off writing in favor of other things, only to fall behind and become further demotivated because of it. For many people, listening to music helps them focus and stay on track while writing. Having a something to listen to can also help inspire creativity when hitting the daily word count feels like a struggle.
Though there are many ways to stay on track and stay motivated during the month, one of the best ways is to create a playlist. It forces you to think about what you’re writing and which songs might make good background noise or help inspire you as you write. Putting together a playlist can also help make writing a priority. The more focus you put on creating a pro-writing environment for yourself, whatever that may be, the more likely you’ll be to want to set aside time each day to hit the necessary word count. Whether you feel most comfortable writing in a coffee shop, a library, or in the comfort of your own bed, creating the right environment, including music (or lack thereof), is key.
It’s still not too late to start NaNoWriMo (or start over) but getting prepared can be difficult if you’re already starting from behind. But fear not! Whether you need some extra motivation, don’t know where to start, or want to try something new, this NaNoWriMo playlist is a great place to start. It’s mix of genres and types of music serves to inspire you while not being overly distracting and taking the focus off of your writing. If music doesn’t help you write, that’s fine too, but if you’re curious and want to give it a try or if you need pre-writing inspiration, this playlist is exactly what you need.
What are your favorite songs or artists to listen to while you write? Feel free to share in the comments!
