Diet Coke Introduces New Can Designs and Flavors

Diet Coke is one of those products with iconic packaging. Even non-Diet Coke drinkers know the unmistakable silver and red cans, and their promise of a bubbly cola beverage without the calorie guilt. But now after 35 years, Diet Coke’s signature look and its flavor is changing.

Coca-Cola announced yesterday that they are not only changing the look and feel of the signature can, but they’re adding four new flavors to the Diet Coke lineup. A new ad campaign for the beverage will hit mid-January.

The can will still be of the 12-ounce variety, but will get a longer, sleeker look. And as for the new flavors? Fans of the original Diet Coke can rest easy. The original flavor will remain in the lineup without change, but its getting some friends. Joining the line are Ginger Lime, Feister Cherry, Zesty Blood Orange, and Twisted Mango. The cans for the flavored versions will have the same style as the new Diet Coke cans, just with different colors.

A press release from Coca-Cola explained that the company had polled nearly 10,000 drinkers across the country over the past two years to find out customer preference for flavor offerings and packaging, the results of that polling leading to these new choices. However, some Diet Coke fans were left wondering what would become of Diet Coke with Lime and Diet Cherry Coke, and if the new offerings would be different in taste. The answer, at least on taste, appears to be yes.

Rafael Acevedo, Coca-Cola North America’s group director for Diet Coke told BuzzFeed that the new flavors were bolder and contained more flavor, giving the specific example that Feister Cherry is spicier than the existing Diet Cherry Coke.

And fans of those older flavors might want to stock up while they can. Once the new versions come out, the old ones will be taken out of the Diet Coke lineup entirely.
