Monthly ‘Idol’ Roundup: February 2018

With less than a month away from the premiere of American Idol‘s new season March 11 on ABC, the show’s alum are busy reminding fans of the show from season’s past about its history with their new music, tour dates, and other exciting news. Let’s find out what some of your favorite Idol artists are up to…

New Music

This month, we spotlighted Season 7 Winner David Cook‘s new album “Chromance,” as well as mentioning his east coast tour and newly announced spot starring in Broadway’s Kinky Boots. We also shone a light on Season 9 winner Lee DeWyze‘s ethereal new album “Paranoia” and his tour supporting that album. Season 11 winner Phillip Phillips is also currently on tour supporting his new album “Collateral,” check that out if you’re a fan!

Season 10 winner Scotty McCreery is album busy celebrating as his debut single “Five More Minutes” went #1 on the country airplay charts. The song comes from his new album “Seasons Change,” out March 16. McCreery also released another song from the album called “Home in my Mind” and will appear with his family on ABC’s Celebrity Family Feud next month.

Season 15 winner Trent Harmon also released his second single since winning the show entitled “You Got ‘Em All.” You can listen on YouTube here, or download it on iTunes, Amazon or Spotify.

Season 8 rocker Allison Iraheta and her band Halo Circus have just released the video for their new single, “Narcissist.” The track is off the band’s forthcoming album Robots and Wranglers, which drops March 16. Season 7 finalist David Hernandez also released a moving song about his recent USO tour entitled “Shield (Coat of Armor)” that you can listen to listen here.

A couple other Idols also have new music on the horizon with Season 5 rocker Chris Daughtry announcing his new album which he calls his band’s “best yet,” Season 2 crooner Ruben Studdard working on a Luther Vandross tribute album and touring, and Season 8 contestant Danny Gokey signing to a new label. Season 7 runner-up David Archuleta also teamed up with singer Nathan Pacheco for a cover of Ed Sheeran and Andrea Bocelli’s song “Perfect.”

Other News

The month started with country superstar Carrie Underwood performing her triumphant new song “Champion” on the Super Bowl prior to the Philadelphia Eagles triumphing over the New England Patriots.

Kelly Clarkson‘s stint as a coach and judge on the The Voice begins on Monday Feb. 26 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC. You can watch as Kelly chooses her team for Season 14 of the show and crack jokes and sings with the others judges, Blake Shelton, Adam Levine and Alicia Keys, like she did in this awesome video of her and Alicia singing the Nina Simone classic “Feeling Good.”

Season 8 Winner Kris Allen is on a mission this month to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Man of the Year Award. If you’re interested in reading up and helping Kris raise money for such a good cause, check out their website. Kris also released a new song this month with his band “The Dames” entitled “Belle Meade Gal.” You can check that out on iTunes, Amazon or Spotify. Season 8 Runner-up Adam Lambert has also been keeping busy touring Europe and the U.K. at the front many for legendary rock band Queen.

Besides David Cook, another Idol alum, Season 5 Runner-up Katherine McPhee is taking over for singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles on Broadway in Waitress. Waitress features music written by Bareilles, including the heart-wrenching “She Used to be Mine,” which is sure to give McPhee’s stellar vocal chops plenty of room to fly. If you’re in New York over the next few months, be sure to check McPhee and Cook out in the Broadway debuts!

As for Idol itself, we’ve learned a few more details about the 16th season before it returns to the small screen next month. Rumors are swirling that Idol will return format of having 24 contestants make the semi-finals before singing solos and celebrity duets, like they did in Season 15. We’re excited to see who will join our new crop of contestants on their journey to becoming the next American Idol. The show also announced that iHeartRadio DJ Bobby Bones will be mentoring the contestants on everything from stage presence to social media.
