What is Christmas? Our staff writer at The Hudsucker shares with us in a fun way how she sees the holiday season, and what it truly means to her in a highly expressive and creative poem; the first to ever grace our magazine.

Be thankful for all that you have, like the things that you need
Not all that you want, because of lust, yearn and greed.
To get is a gift, but to give is true glory
So choose your own pen, and write your own story.
Christmas should be about the lights and the sound,
The way the wind dances, as snowflakes reach the ground.
About the way that a pine tree, smells in the cold
About the scent that you savor, that you inhale, and hold.
About the snow that falls gently, slow motion from the sky
Like the heavens are smiling, and in happiness they cry.
Christmas is a holiday that sometimes looses touch
With it’s purpose and function, and then needs a crutch.
A crutch to hold onto, as it steadies its knees
And flutters like that snowflake, dancing in the breeze.
It needs a reminder, every now and then from us
Of the point of the madness, the hustle, the fuss.
It’s for the excitement, the happiness, and the joy
Of a wonderful surprise, all from one little toy.
It’s the hope that hangs merrily in the air
And flirts with strangers without a care.
It’s the songs that bring joy, and the family together
And the warmth from the fireplace, no matter the weather.
Christmas is more than a holiday, to me
It’s a chance to give to others, and to actually see.
That the best gift at all is the one we can’t buy
And it’s one we can’t hold, or see with an eye.
The best things in life, aren’t things, this is true
So what does Christmas, really mean to you?
