Last night, we finally found out definitively who Savitar is. For some of us it didn’t feel like much of a surprise as we’d pieced together the clues, while for others it was an emotionally punch to the gut that left more questions. No matter which camp you’re in, the episode was beautifully nuanced with layers of emotions for all of the members of Team Flash. We start with Joe and Cecile returning to House of West after a run. Joe isn’t a huge running fan, but what really takes his breath away is Cecile admitting that she loves him. Before Joe can catch his breath and say something his phone buzzes. He’s needed at STAR. When Joe gets to STAR, Barry informs the assembled team about Tracy Brand, the woman future Barry gave him information on. Julian is more focused on helping Caitlin which leads to some tense moments between Jules and Cisco.
Barry, Cisco and HR go to the university to find Brand. She’s not a doctor yet and she’s just failed her dissertation and is literally trying to burn her work. Barry then accidentally reveals information from her paper that she hasn’t published, but Barry doesn’t get to explain. Killer Frost breezes up and shoots an icicle at Brand. Barry saves her, Cisco has a clear shot but chokes, and Frost leaves. They all end up at the police station where Barry overhears Cecile and Joe talking about her confession. Brand is impatient to leave the police station and Joe tries to explain that Frost will try again. Cut to Frost and Savitar. He’s disappointed that Frost didn’t kill Brand and gives her a directive to kill and live up to her name.
Later, HR meets up with Brand at Jitters. HR buys her coffee because she is without funds and starts chatting her up about science. The information HR uses is being fed to him by Cisco and Julian, but it seems to work. Brand is listening and engaged. Barry and Joe are outside Jitters on stakeout and they also chat about how Joe just needs to be honest with Cecile about everything. Back inside Jitters, Brand explains that she thinks speedsters get their powers from a force and HR suggests the Speed Force. It’s going great until HR notices his coffee is frozen.
HR and Brand rush outside and another icicle heads their way. Barry manages to save Brand while Frost skates off on an ice bridge she’s creating. Barry goes after her and tells Cisco to knock her out. But he can’t. Cisco is briefly distracted with a memory of Caitlin and Frost fires ice at him. Barry takes that blast of ice and is out. Frost then stabs him with an icicle in the leg.
Back at STAR, the team tells Brand about the future. It’s a lot for her to process and even more to deal with when the team asks her to develop that future tech now. Brand leaves, but HR is able to talk her into helping. Meanwhile, Julian approaches Cisco and wants to know why Cisco didn’t stop Frost. Cisco ultimately reveals that he’s afraid he’ll accidentally kill her. Joe and Barry talk more about Cecile, but then HR bursts in. Brand has left. After some brainstorming, HR figure sout that Brand is at a statue of Galileo. He goes to find her and she apologies for leaving, but admits to being intimidated. HR talks to her and boosts her confidence.
At the West house Joe is visited by Cecile, but instead of opening up to her Joe breaks up with Cecile. She leaves, but there is immediately another knock on the door. It’s Cecile. With Frost holding an icicle to her throat. Frost is going to kill her unless the team turns over Brand to an address that Joe will get by text. At STAR Julian and Cisco talk again with Juilan admitting that he believes he can save Caitlin. And then, it’s off to the address.
At the designated warehouse the team finds Frost with Cecile. Frost tells Barry that Savitar is always able to be ahead of them, even down to exactly what Barry will say. He also knows Cisco is hiding in the rafters so she blows them up. Cisco escapes using his vibe powers while Barry saves Joe from an ice blast. Cisco and Frost fight, but Cisco manages to incapacitate her. He uses this moment to take a sample of her blood, but before the team can go, Savitar speeds in and takes Frost.
Back at the lab Julian thinks they can use the blood sample to create a cure for Caitlin. HR brings Brand more coffee and she reveals that she thinks Savitar’s suit protects him from the speed energy and she can use it to trap him. Joe makes up with Cecile, removes his wedding ring, and tells her that he loves her. Later, back at home, Joe hangs out with his family (including Wally, who had gone to Earth 3 to visit Jesse). As they talk Barry figures something out. He abruptly leaves to go find Savitar and after a brief confrontation of words Savitar steps out of his suit.
Are you ready?
Savitar is Barry.
Next week, we collectively stop screaming and the team tries to stop future evil Barry from fulfilling whatever weird destiny this is.
